Shel Silverstein: Where the Sidewalk Ends 30th A

Where the Sidewalk Ends 30th A

Description

Where the Sidewalk Ends turns forty! To celebrate this anniversary of Shel Silverstein's outrageous and profound classic poetry collection, the jacket features an eye-catching commemorative red sticker. This special edition, with twelve extra poems, was first published in 2004 and is a timeless bestseller.Where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. There you'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist.Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is one of Parent & Child magazine's 100 Greatest Books for Kids. School Library Journal said, "Silverstein has an excellent sense of rhythm and rhyme and a good ear for alliteration and assonance that make these poems a pleasure to read aloud."Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. In 1964, Shel's creativity continued to flourish as four more books were published in the same year Don't Bump the Glump!, A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, and the beloved classic The Giving Tree. Later he continued to build his remarkable body of work with Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and Runny Babbit. Supports the Common Core State Standards."

Frances Brody: A Woman Unknown

A Woman Unknown

Description

The Woman Unknown: Deirdre Fitzpatrick is married to a man who wants to know where she really goes when supposedly taking care of her sick mother and calls on the expertise of Kate Shackleton, amateur sleuth extraordinaire to investigate. The Gentleman: Everett Runcie is a banker facing ruin and disgrace. His American heiress wife will no longer pay for his mistakes, or tolerate his infidelity, and is seeking a divorce. The Murder: When a chambermaid enters Runcie's hotel room, she is shocked to find that he is alone - and dead! Suddenly Kate is thrown into the depths of an altogether more sinister investigation. Can she uncover the truth of her most complex, and personal, case to date?

"Morrison is one of the most adventurous and commercially successful comic-book writers of the past 25 years, retrieving superheroic and science-fictional dispatches from the fringes of consciousness, splattering his chaotic visions onto the page." -- Rolling Stone   This accessible volume describes first-century Jewish and Christian Llewellyn's 2016 Witches' Companion: An Almanac for Contemporary Living pdf beliefs about the land of Israel and offers a full survey of New Testament passages that directly address the question of land and faith. Respected New Testament scholar Gary M. Burge examines present-day tensions surrounding "territorial religion" in the modern Middle East, helping contemporary Christians develop a Christian theology of the land and assess Bible-based claims in discussions of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle. For Australia, a new nation with a relatively small population, the death of 60,000 soldiers during World War I was catastrophic. It is hardly surprising, then, that Australians evaluating the consequences of the conflict have tended to focus primarily on the numbing numbers of losses - on the sheer quantity of all those countrymen who did not return. That there must have been extraordinary individuals among them has been implicitly understood, but these special Australians are unknown today. This book seeks to retrieve their stories and to fill the gaps in our collective memory. Farewell, Dear People contains ten extended biographies of young men who exemplified Australia's gifted lost generation of World War I.

Rafael Lopez,Rafael A Permuy Laopez,Julio Caeiro: Spanish Republican Aces

Spanish Republican Aces

Description

At the start of the Spanish Civil War, most young fighter pilot officers joined the rebels, while the high ranking officers, grupo or escuadrilla commanders, and the NCOs, sergeants and corporals remained loyal to the government. Mostly flying the obsolete Nieuport Ni.52s these loyalists were soon outpaced by the more modern Fiat CR.32s and Heinkel He 51s. However, at this early stage of the war, there were several Republican airmen who became aces and famous in the process, despite the small numbers of enemy aircraft shot down. Widely speaking, the Republican military aviation did not keep an exhaustive record of individual shooting claims. However, sufficient documentation exists to make a reasonable assumption as to which pilots fall into the ace category. This volume details the exploits of those pilots, complementing previous works in the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series on Nationalist CR.32 Aces and Polikarpov I-15, I-16 and I-152 Aces.

SLIME MAKES U SMILE "" After decades of anticipation, Alfred is proud to release the officially licensed, collectible sheet music companion folios to The Legend of Zelda(tm) video game series. The 33 arrangements in this intermediate-advanced piano edition are note-for-note transcriptions of instantly recognizable melodies beloved by generations of gamers around the globe. From Koji Kondo's iconic "The Legend of Zelda(tm) Main Theme" to The Spanish Republican Aces free pdf Legend of Zelda(tm): Spirit Tracks themes, the dozens of pieces in this book represent two and a half decades of Nintendo(R) video game favorites. Adding to the fun, graphics from the corresponding games grace each page of the sheet music. Impress friends, family, and audiences of all ages by playing from this magnificent collection, which makes a great gift for every pianist.

Homer,E. V. Rieu,Peter Jones,D.C.H. Rieu: The Iliad

The Iliad

Description

Homer's Iliad is the greatest and most influential epic poem ever written, telling of the tragic and bloody climax to the ten-year siege of Troy. This Penguin Classics edition was originally translated by E.V. Rieu, revised and updated with an introduction and notes by Peter Jones and D.C.H. Rieu. One of the foremost achievements in Western literature, Homer's Iliad tells the story of the darkest episode in the Trojan War. At its centre is Achilles, the greatest warrior-champion of the Greeks, and his refusal to fight after being humiliated by his leader Agamemnon. But when the Trojan Hector kills Achilles' close friend Patroclus, he storms back into battle to take revenge - even though he knows this will ensure his own untimely death. Interwoven with this tragic sequence of events are powerfully moving descriptions of the ebb and flow of battle, of the domestic world inside Troy's besieged city of Ilium, and of the conflicts between the Gods on Olympus as they argue over the fate of mortals. E.V. Rieu's acclaimed translation of The Iliad was one of the first titles published in Penguin Classics, and now has classic status itself. For this edition, Rieu's text has been revised, and now a new introduction and notes by Peter Jones complement the original introduction. Seven Greek cities claim the honour of being the birthplace of Homer (c. 8th-7th century BC), the poet to whom the composition of the Iliad and Odyssey are attributed. The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Western literature, but the identity - or even the existence - of Homer himself is a complete mystery, with no reliable biographical information having survived. If you enjoyed the Iliad, you might like Homer's Odyssey, also available in Penguin Classics.

KL: A History of the Nazi Concentration Camps

Description

In March of 1933, a disused factory surrounded by barbed wire held 223 prisoners in the town of Dachau. By the end of 1945, the SS concentration camp system had become an overwhelming landscape of terror. Twenty-two large camps and over one thousand satellite camps throughout Germany and Europe were at the heart of the Nazi campaign of repression and intimidation. The importance of the camps in terms of Nazi history and our modern world cannot be questioned. Dr Nikolaus Wachsmann is the first historian to write a complete history of the camps. Combining the political and the personal, Wachsmann examines the organisation of such an immense genocidal machine, whilst drawing a vivid picture of life inside the camps for the individual prisoner. The book gives voice to those typically forgotten in Nazi history: the 'social deviants', criminals and unwanted ethnicities that all faced the terror of the camps. Wachsmann explores the practice of institutionalised murder and inmate collaboration with the SS selectively ignored by many historians. Pulling together a wealth of in-depth research, official documents, contemporary studies and the evidence of survivors themselves, KL is a complete but accessible narrative.

Ruby Tandoh: Flavour: Eat What You Love

Flavour: Eat What You Love

Description

Ruby Tandoh's new book brings us over 170 recipes - sweet and savoury - for every day, every budget, every taste, in a cookbook that puts your appetite first. Organised by ingredient, Flavour helps you to follow your cravings, or whatever you have in the fridge, to a recipe. Creative, approachable and inspiring, this is cooking that, while focusing on practicality and affordability, leaves you free to go wherever your appetite takes you. It is a celebration of the joy of cooking and eating. Ruby encourages us to look at the best ways to cook each ingredient; when it's in season, and which flavours pair well with it. With this thoughtful approach, every ingredient has space to shine; storecupboard staples inspire as much attention as a cut of meat and a sprig of thyme takes centre stage baked into soft teatime cakes. These are recipes that feel good to make, eat and share, and each plate of food is assembled with care and balance. Including Hot and Sour Lentil Soup, Ghanaian Groundnut Chicken Stew, Glazed Blueberry Fritter Doughnuts, Mystic Pizza and Carrot and Feta Bites with Lime Yoghurt, this is a cookbook that focuses above all on flavour and freedom - to eat what you love.

In the realm of amusing, deadpan greetings cards, Cath Tate is the original and best. In her thirty-year career she has created thousands of witty, original and often subversive cards, featuring grim-faced old ladies, ludicrously dressed 1920s gentlemen and bizarre-looking children, paired with text that perfectly captures her highly individual and devastatingly funny view on the world. This hilarious book - a perfect gift for a beloved friend - brings together the best of Cath's work on friendship. Whimsical, scurrilous and - very occasionally - tender, it is packed with insights into today's modern friendships, from belligerent bookclubs to over-enthusiastic drama queens to ridiculous hen parties. After all, as Cath says, 'A friend is someone who likes you even though they know you.' Milly-Molly-Mandy lives in a tiny village in the heart of the countryside. She is always busy doing things, and whether she is sledging in the snow with Billy Blunt and little-friend-Susan, or being a bridesmaid, you're sure to have fun when Milly-Molly-Mandy's around! The adventures of this lively little girl and Flavour: Eat What You Love ebook pdf her chums first appeared over eighty years ago and they have been delighting young children ever since.

Michael Ruhlman: The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute of America

The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute of America

Description

"Well reported and heartfelt, Ruhlman communicates the passion that draws the acolyte to this precise and frantic profession." "The New York Times Book Review"Just over a decade ago, journalist Michael Ruhlman donned a chef's jacket and houndstooth-check pants to join the students at the Culinary Institute of America, the country's oldest and most influential cooking school. But "The Making of a Chef" is not just about holding a knife or slicing an onion; it's also about the nature and spirit of being a professional cook and the people who enter the profession. As Ruhlman now an expert on the fundamentals of cooking recounts his growing mastery of the skills of his adopted profession, he propels himself and his readers through a score of kitchens and classrooms in search of the elusive, unnameable elements of great food. Incisively reported, with an insider's passion and attention to detail, "The Making of a Chef" remains the most vivid and compelling memoir of a professional culinary education on record."

One of the world s most beloved writers and bestselling author of "One Summer" takes his ultimate journey into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer. He ordered his uncle to be beheaded; he usurped his father's throne; he started a war which lasted The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute of America download epub for more than a hundred years, and taxed his people more than any other previous king. Yet for centuries Edward III was celebrated as the most brilliant king England had ever had, and three hundred years after his death it was said that his kingship was perhaps the greatest that the world had ever known. In this first full study of the man's character and life, Ian Mortimer shows how Edward personally provided the impetus for much of the drama of his fifty-year reign. Under him the feudal kingdom of England became a highly organised nation and experienced its longest period of domestic peace in the middle ages. Nineteenth century historians saw in Edward the opportunity to decry a warmonger, and painted him as a self-seeking, rapacious, tax-gathering conqueror. Yet as this book shows, beneath the strong warrior king was a compassionate, conscientious and often merciful man - resolute yet devoted to his wife, friends and family. He emerges as a strikingly modern figure, to whom many will be able to relate - the father of both the English nation and the English people.

John Cleese: So, Anyway...

So, Anyway...

Description

John Cleese s huge comedic influence has stretched across generations; his sharp irreverent eye and the unique brand of physical comedy he perfected with Monty Python, on "Fawlty Towers," and beyond now seem written into comedy s DNA. In this rollicking memoir, "So, Anyway ," Cleese takes readers on a Grand Tour of his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future Python partner Graham Chapman), to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. Cleese was just days away from graduating Cambridge and setting off on a law career when he was visited by two BBC executives, who offered him a job writing comedy for radio. That fateful moment and a near-simultaneous offer to take his university humor revue to London s famed West End propelled him down a different path, cutting his teeth writing for stars like David Frost and Peter Sellers, and eventually joining the five other Pythons to pioneer a new kind of comedy that prized invention, silliness, and absurdity. Along the way, he found his first true love with the actress Connie Booth and transformed himself from a reluctant performer to a world class actor and back again. Twisting and turning through surprising stories and hilarious digressions with some brief pauses along the way that comprise a fascinating primer on what s funny and why this story of a young man s journey to the pinnacle of comedy is a masterly performance by a master performer. "From the Hardcover edition.""
